21 Jul Vincent van Gogh: Van Gogh sold only 1 painting in his life
Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who is one of the famous and influential figures in Western art. He created 2,100 artworks including landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and self-portraits. The artworks are characterized by bright, bold and dramatic colours combined with expressive brushwork. He committed suicide in 37 after years of mental illness and poverty.
Short Career
In 1869 Venus/Rahu period, he was working in the art dealers Goupil & Cie in The Hague.
In 1873 Venus/Jupiter period where both planets are extremely strong in his chart, he was transferred to Goupil’s London branch at Southampton Street. This was the happy time of his life and he was successful at his work. At the age of 20, he was earning more than his father.
In 1881 on the onset of Sun period, Sun is in the 7th house of marriage in the marriage chart (Navamsha) aspected by 7th ruler Jupiter but also aspected by Ketu from the same 11th house. Transiting Rahu aspects the 10th house where Natal Venus as significator of relationship is but hemmed in by malefics. Transiting Saturn was conjunct Transiting Jupiter in the 11th house where Jupiter also ruled 7th house of marriage but being denied by a debilitated Transiting Saturn.
Van Gogh returned to Etten for an extended stay with his parents and he continued to draw using his neighbours as subjects. He met his recently widowed cousin Cornelia “Kee” Vos-Stricker, daughter of his mother’s older sister. He was thrilled and took long walks with her. Despite being 7 years old than him having an 8 years old son, Van Gogh surprised everyone by proposing his love to her. He was rejected with the words “Nooit, Neen, Nimmer” (No, Nay, Never). For the rest of the Sun period until 1887, Van Gogh continued to paint and draw and produced several works in Netherlands, Antwerp, and Paris.
In 1888 Moon period, Moon as ruler of 2nd house of earnings and food ingestion is debilitated in the 6th house of disease. Van Gogh was ill from drink and suffering from smoker’s cough and sought refuge in Arles, France. His arts made a breakthrough in the exotic Arles and he completed 200 paintings and more than 100 drawings and watercolours. His works then include “The Red Vineyard”, “Starry Night over the Rhône”, “The Starry Night”, and many more.
In Moon/Rahu period, Rahu is aspecting the 5th house of mind where Venus as 5th ruler is hemmed in by 2 malefics. He argued with Gaugrin and severed his own left ear with a razor with no recollection of the incident after the event. He was sent to Arles hospital and diagnosed “acute mania with generalized delirium”. In 1889, Van Gogh entered the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. In 1890 Moon/Jupiter period, he committed suicide.
UnderAchievement & UnRecognised Talents
Excellent Painter with Career Hindrances
At one look, Van Gogh’s birth chart isn’t so bad but there is not much recognition for his works. Sun and Mars look great in the 10th house giving him great capabilities in his career but Sun and Mars are in fact malefic planets for him as Sun rules the 3rd house of painting and Mars being his most malefic planet rules the 6th house and 11th house competitive houses. Venus is a good planet being exalted and ruling the 5th house of creativity and 12th house of isolation. He is driven to develop great paintings in isolation. However, the great creative Venus is being hemmed in by Sun and Mars which are detrimental to his creative works. There is no raja yogas of any kind in the 10th house. Instead, there is an arishta yoga (combinations of suffering) with ruler of 6 and 12 in the 10th house. Mars ruling the 6th house and 11th house has debilitated planets in both houses, with Mars itself being conjunct exalted Venus in the 10th house. Although he has poor health and is not recognized, he pulled all his strength into his artworks nonetheless.
Dissolution of Materiality
Sun, Mars, Venus are all disposited to the strong Jupiter in the 7th house conjunct Ketu. Jupiter rules the 10th house of career is strong in its own sign which propels him in his painting career. However Jupiter is located in the same nakshatra (lunar mansion) of Mula with Ketu which is also ruled by Ketu denoting the dissolution of fame and material pursuits, for this is the nakshatra of material destruction. Jupiter and Ketu are also aspecting his 11th house of achievements.
Unnoticed Great Talents
Upon closer look, all the planets in the 10th house are in the nakshatras ruled by Saturn and Mercury. Saturn rules the 8th house of obstacles and 9th house of fortune sitting in the 11th house of achievements. Saturn being debilitated brings out the obstacles for his achievements greatly. Mercury ruling his Ascendant being conjunct with debilitated Saturn is greatly disturbed by his underachievement. The disturbance was also complicated by Uranus and Pluto in the same 11th house. His Moon being debilitated in the 6th house of difficulties also gave him his emotional turmoil. The Moon is also in the nakshatra of Mercury which was greatly hindered by the debilitated Saturn.
In the destiny chart (Navamsha), the 5th ruler of mind Venus is conjunct extremely malefic planet Mars which then sends a deadly 8th aspect to the emotional Moon. The chart ruler and logical mind Mercury is locked up in the 12th house of isolation being confined by an opposing Saturn.
In the career chart (Dashamsha), Jupiter is strong in the 10th house of career but conjunct 3 malefics Mars, Ketu, Saturn all 3 planets in Mula nakshatra.
During his lifetime, Van Gogh was never famous as a painter and struggled to make a living as an artist. Van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime, The Red Vineyard. This painting was sold in Brussels for 400 Francs only a few months before his death.
Financial Difficulties
There is only 1 dhana yoga (financial combination) in the 11th house with Saturn ruling the 9th house of fortune and Mercury ruling the 1st house. However due to the debilitated Saturn, the dhana yoga impact is very minimal. From the moon chart, Jupiter and Ketu sits in the 2nd house creating difficulties in his finance being in a difficult nakshatra. Jupiter and Ketu is also aspecting the 6th house where the debilitated Saturn is creating struggles with his financial situations with Mercury ruling the 8th house of obstacles and 11th house of gains.
Mental Illness
In the D6 disease chart, Mercury as the ruler of the chart sits in the 8th house of chronic disease conjunct and very much worsened by Jupiter, Rahu(North Node of the Moon), and Ketu (South Node of the Moon). Mercury, Jupiter, Rahu, Ketu are also opposed by malefic Mars which rules the 8th house itself. Mars also aspects the 5th house of the mind tormenting his mind further. Jupiter is not a benefic in this chart. Saturn as the ruler of 5th house of mind and 6th house of health is located in the 12th house of hospital and isolation aspected by malefic Jupiter, Rahu, and Ketu altogether caused him all his mental torments, hospitalization, and addictions. Sun ruling the 12th house of addictions are in a parivartana yoga with Saturn as ruler of 5th house of mind aggravated his mind further still. Ruler of the lucky 9th house of spirit Venus sits in the 3rd house which is 8 houses away from the 8th house does not help in this chart.
Van Gogh suffered from psychotic episodes and delusions. Although he worried about his mental instability, he often neglected his health by not eating properly and drank heavily. His friendship with Paul Gaugrin ended when he was in a confrontation and severed his own left ear out of rage. He spent time in psychiatric hospitals.
Suicide
In 1890 July Moon/Jupiter period, Van Gogh was going through a nodal return with Rahu and Ketu exactly at their nodal position amplifying his disturbed Natal Jupiter position in the chart. Transiting Jupiter is debilitated in the 8th house of death. From the moon chart, Jupiter rules his 5th house of mind being debilitated crippling his sanity and discretion. Transiting Moon was debilitated with extremely malefic Transiting Mars going over his debilitated Natal Moon in the 6th house of health. Transiting Saturn and Rahu were also aspecting his 5th house of mind.
Van Gogh shot himself with a 7mm Lefaucheux à broche revolver in the chest. The bullet was deflected by a rib and passed through his chest without doing much damage to his internal organs. He was still able to walk back to Auberge Ravoux to be attended by doctors but there was no surgeon to remove the bullet. He was left alone smoking his pipe. He was still in good spirits until an untreated infection took him 30 hours later after the incident. His last words to his younger brother Theo was “The sadness will last forever”.
Painting Toxins and Absinthe Alcohol Poison
Was Van Gogh poisoned?
Yes, there might have been heavy poison in his body that caused him all the miseries.
Birth Chart
From the birth chart it is not so apparent. The ruler of the 2nd house of ingestion goes into the 6th house debilitated and very close to Gandanta degrees can suggest that he’s not so smart in ingestion and can bring problems to his digestion according to his mood. Rahu in the first house ruling the head and entire life is actually disposited through Mrigashira nakshatra to Mars, the most malefic planet for a Gemini Ascendant. With Mars ruling 6th house of digestion and Rahu by nakshatra can bring poison to his digestive system and to his life. Mars also aspects back the Ascendant can connect the bad digestion back to him. Mars being disposited through Uttara Bhadrapada to a debilitated Saturn can also suggest problems with his weak digestion.
Moon Chart (Chandra Lagna)
From the moon chart it becomes more prominent. A strong Jupiter and Ketu in 2nd house disposited to Mula can indicate problems with his ingestion. Rahu in the 8th house can cause chronic health problems and it is also disposited to Mercury in the 6th house of health. Saturn debilitated in the 6th house aspected by Jupiter and Ketu can aggravate his digestion problems.
Disease Chart
From the disease chart, it has the same problematic pattern as the moon chart. Mars as the most malefic planet here goes into the 2nd house of ingestion, and it is disposited by Vishaka nakshatra to Jupiter in 8th house. The poisonous Rahu and even Ketu in the 8th house of chronic problems are opposing Mars in the 2nd house of eating and drinking. 8th house is not only amplified by Jupiter in it, it is also strengthened by Mars aspect, ruler of the 8th house.
Saturn ruling the 6th house of digestion is together with Neptune in the 12th house giving him great unknown troubles with digestion. The troubled Saturn is aspecting its own 6th house, and its being aspecting by Jupiter, Rahu, Ketu from the 8th house. Digesting poison? Even Saturn is disposited by Purva Phalguni nakshatra to Venus as ruler of 2nd house, and Neptune is disposited by Magha nakshatra to Ketu in 8th house.
If you look at it from the Moon in the chart, all the 8th house planets Rahu, Ketu, Jupiter, Mercury go into the 2nd house from the Moon!

Below are some samples of Van Gogh’s works for your pleasure.
The Red Vineyard 1888, Vincent van Gogh
This is commonly believed to be the only Van Gogh painting ever sold in his lifetime. The Red Vineyard was exhibited for the first time at the annual exhibition of Les XX, 1890 in Brussels. It was sold for 400 Francs to Anna Boch, an impressionist painter, member of Les XX and art collector from Belgium. The painting is now located in Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow.
Starry Night over the Rhône 1888, Vincent van Gogh
Starry Night Over the Rhône was painted at a spot on the bank of the Rhône River that was only a one or two-minute walk from the Yellow House on the Place Lamartine which Van Gogh was renting at the time. The painting was first exhibited in 1889 at the annual exhibition of the Société des Artistes Indépendants in Paris, together with the Irises. The painting is now located in Musée d’Orsay, Paris.
The Starry Night 1889, Vincent van Gogh
The Starry Night depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an idealized village. It is located in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The Starry Night is regarded as one of Van Gogh’s finest works. There is even a song named “Vincent (Starry Starry Night)” by Don McLean where the Amsterdam’s Van Gogh museum plays the music for visitors everyday.
Road in Etten 1881, Vincent van Gogh
In 1881 van Gogh briefly resided in Etten, where he produced a number of drawings of local peasants and laborers performing routine, humble tasks. This masterful work, in which a man with a broom is seen sweeping a street lined with pollard willows, is a characteristic example.
La Berceuse (Woman Rocking a Cradle; Augustine-Alix Pellicot Roulin, 1851–1930) 1889, Vincent van Gogh
Of the five versions of Van Gogh’s portrait of Augustine Roulin, wife of his friend the postmaster of Arles, the present canvas is the one the sitter chose for herself. Van Gogh remarked that “she had a good eye and took the best.” He began the portraits just before his breakdown in Arles, in December 1888, and completed them in early 1889, calling them “La Berceuse,” meaning “lullaby, or woman who rocks the cradle,” indicated by the rope held in the sitter’s hand, which is attached to the unseen cradle.
First Steps, after Millet 1890, Vincent van Gogh
In fall and winter 1889–90, while a voluntary patient at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh painted twenty-one copies after Millet, an artist he greatly admired. He considered his copies “translations” akin to a musician’s interpretation of a composer’s work. He let the black-and-white images—whether prints, reproductions, or, as here, a photograph that his brother, Theo, had sent—pose “as a subject,” then he would “improvise color on it.” For this work of January 1890, Van Gogh squared-up a photograph of Millet’s First Steps and transferred it to the canvas.
