05 Oct Anandamayi Ma: An Expression of the Divine
Anandamayi was born Nirmala Sundari (translated as “Immaculate, Beautiful One”) in Kheora, Brahmanbaria District, British India, currently Bangladesh. Faith healing and other miracles were attributed to her by her followers. Paramhansa Yogananda translated Anandamayi as “joy-permeated”. Her name was given by her devotees in the 1920s to describe her habitual state of divine joy and bliss. In school days, her family had doubts about her mental abilities because of her indifference and constantly happy demeanor. When her mother was seriously ill once, people were puzzled about the child who remained apparently unaffected.
Divine Expression
There are only 7 planets in a chart and Anandamayi Ma has overly powerful 4 planets in exaltation performing at their peak performance with fully awoken energy. Venus, Jupiter, Sun, Saturn are all exalted in her chart. She has Venus as her soul planet atmakaraka exalted in Pisces in the 1st house very near to exaltation degree, expressing her love and compassion for all mankind. Jupiter is exalted in her 5th house of the mind in a very auspicious and religious nakshatra (lunar mansion) of Pushya, very close to exaltation degree as well. Moon even though is debilitated in the 9th house of spirituality is disposited to the Mars conjunct Rahu in the 12th house of seclusion. She spent much of her time secluded with ecstasy attuned with divine energy. Even the Sun as the great luminary and Saturn as the planet of wisdom are exalted and they are also not too far away from their exaltation degrees. Moon is also in the 1st house of her destiny chart (Navamsha) while Venus as the atmakaraka soul planet is again exalted in the destiny chart.
From the moon chart, she has Venus exalted in the 5th house of the mind and Jupiter exalted in the 9th house of spirituality, while Jupiter aspects the Moon in the 1st house. This is the powerful trinal connection of her body, mind, and spirit. She also has Mars and Rahu (North Node of the Moon) in the private 4th house of the soul and happiness and Ketu (South Node of the Moon) in the 10th house of public life and career. Ketu as a planet of spirituality allows her to spread her wisdom to millions of people. With Sun and Saturn exalted across her 6th house of service and 12th house of seclusion and servicing the public, she serviced the world with her deep knowledge and experience with the divine.
Anandamayi Ma has stated that “All paths are my paths”, and “I have no particular path”.
Life
Marriage
In 1908 Mercury/Saturn period, Transiting Jupiter returned to its Natal position exalted in the 5th house aspecting Transiting Saturn the period ruler in the 1st house, where Transiting Saturn was in Jupiter’s sign of Pisces. Transiting Saturn was in the 1st house aspecting the 7th house as well as aspecting Mercury, ruler of the 7th house of marriage. In the destiny chart (Navamsha), Mercury rules the 7th house of marriage again and is in Saturn’s sign. From the moon chart, Saturn was also aspecting the 7th house of marriage while being blessed by aspect from the exalted Jupiter, the significator of husband. Transiting Saturn was also conjunct Natal Venus as significator of marriage while Venus was aspected by Transiting Jupiter.
According to the rural custom at that time, she was married to Ramani Mohan Chakrabarti of Vikramapura (Bholanath) at the age of 13 years old. She was often in a withdrawn meditative state much of the time. At the age of 17, she went to live with her husband in Ashtagram but it was a celibate marriage. Whenever thoughts of sexuality occurred to Ramani, Nirmala’s body would take on the qualities of death. Later, Bholanath her husband took initiation from her and accepted Anandamayi as his guru.
Spiritual Initiation
In 1922 Venus/Mars period where Venus are Mars are the most powerful planets in her destiny chart (Navamsha). Venus is in Pisces exalted in the 4th house of the soul while Mars is in its own sign of Aries in the 5th house of the mind. At the age of 26 years old, Nirmala enacted her own spiritual initiation. She explained that the ceremony and its rites were being revealed to her spontaneously as and when they were called for.
In 1924 Venus/Rahu period, Rahu is in the 12th house of seclusion aspecting the 4th house of home conjunct Mars where Mars rules the 9th house of traveling. Nirmala was having a nodal inverse where from the moon chart Transiting Ketu was conjunct Nodal Rahu in the 4th house of home and she moved to Shahbag, Dhaka with her husband.
She continued to perform her household tasks while also often withdrawn into a state of ecstasy. She underwent a mystic experience once when she held difficult yogic positions for long periods of time with complex tantric hand positions and gestures. More people began to be drawn to her as what they saw to be a living embodiment of the divine. Scholars were attracted to Anandamayi Ma’s spirituality and teaching.
Constant Moving and Guidance to the World
With Rahu and Mars in the 12th house of foreign lands while Mars rules the 9th house of traveling and aspects Mercury, the ruler of the 4th house of home. Anandamayi Ma subsequently moved to North India but was frequently on the move from place to place showing her beatific presence and spreading her wisdom. It is not a coincidence that in her Navamsha destiny chart, Neptune as the planet of spirituality sits in the 9th house of spirituality conjunct the fixed star Regulus where the dispositor Sun goes into the 10th house conjunct Jupiter the guru planet.
She has inspired millions of individuals of different faiths of diverse roles in life including Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Jawarharlal Nehru, Former Prime Minister of Canada, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, the Queen Mother of Greece, and the Former President of India, Ragendra Prasad.
Divine Wisdom of Anandamayi Ma
She did not advise the same method of religion for all. She said: “How can one impose limitations on the infinite by declaring this is the only path—and, why should there be so many different religions and sects? Because through every one of them He gives Himself to Himself, so that each person may advance according to his inborn nature.” Everyone was welcome and she was equally at ease while giving advice to all practitioners of different faiths.
One of her famous quotes is “My consciousness has never associated itself with this temporary body. Before I came on this earth, Father, I was the same. As a little girl, I was the same. I grew into womanhood, but still I was the same. When the family in which I had been born made arrangements to have this body married, I was the same… And, Father, in front of you now, I am the same. Ever afterward, though the dance of creation change around me in the hall of eternity, I shall be the same”.
